David Gene Bailey, 73, of Tecumseh, passed away unexpectedly August 19, 2020 in Tecumseh, Nebraska. He was born to Wilburn “Tex” and Reta (Parrish) Bailey on December 8, 1946 in Tecumseh, Nebraska. Dave attended Vesta and Spring Creek rural schools and graduated from Tecumseh High School in 1965.

He enlisted in the United States Navy on June 1, 1966 and served his country in Vietnam until he transferred to the naval reserves on October 10, 1969. He received his honorable discharge on January 31, 1972. He was a member of the Sea Bees and enjoyed keeping in touch with fellow navy personnel over the years. He faithfully assisted with the VFW and American Legion in providing military rites for veterans and keeping up the legion ball field maintenance.

Dave was united in marriage to Brenda Van Winkle on August 30, 1968 at the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Tecumseh, Nebraska. To this union two sons were born, David, Jr. and Michael. Dave and Brenda made their home in Tecumseh where they raised their sons. Dave worked for the Nebraska Department of Roads out of the Tecumseh office for 25 years. After his retirement, Dave enjoyed fishing, metal detecting, doing yard work and fixing things. Dave grew up with his family attending the First Baptist Church in Tecumseh. Dave was a very kind, gentle soul and was a good friend to many. He was a good husband, grandpa and brother. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Dave is survived by his wife Brenda of Tecumseh, sons, David Bailey, Jr. and wife Mary and Mike Bailey of Wilbur, granddaughters, Courtney Bailey, Ashley Bailey and Kayla Bailey, great-grandchildren, Bryson and Keygan, brother, Fred Bailey and wife Barbara of CO, sisters, Linda Speckmann and husband Orville of Tecumseh, Connie Stinson and husband Ron of Lincoln, Delores Vancura of MS and Jana Moore of Lincoln, brother-in-law and sister-in law, Brett and Lisa Van Winkle of Vesta and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant sister, Mary Ellen.

Memorial services were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, August 24, 2020 at the Wherry Mortuary in Tecumseh, Nebraska with Rev. Hugh Giesbrecht officiating. Special music included “The Dance” by Garth Brooks and “Go Rest High On That Mountain” by Vince Gill. Inurnment was in the Vesta Cemetery, rural Tecumseh, Nebraska with full military honors by the Navy Funeral Honors Team and the Tecumseh VFW Post #8221 and American Legion Post #2. Memorials may go to the Tecumseh VFW and American Legion Posts. Services were entrusted to Wherry Mortuary, Tecumseh, Nebraska.
