Sterling, Johnson-Brock compete at Pioneer Indoor meet

CRETE - The Sterling and Johnson-Brock track teams competed at the 2019 Pioneer Conference Indoor Track Meet at Doane on Thursday, March 21st. The Sterling girls finished as runner-up with 72 points while the Lady Eagles placed 9th with 18.333 points. For the boys, Sterling also placed 2nd with 83 points while Johnson-Brock took 6th place with 37 points. All area team and individual results are as follows.

Girls' Team Standings Tri-County 105.333, Sterling 72, NC Lourdes Central 62, Diller/Odell 60, Friend 48, FC Sacred Heart 41.333, Humboldt Table Rock Steinauer 29, Pawnee City 19, Johnson-Brock 18.333, Wymore Southern 10.

Sterling’s Nicole Harms Signs Up for Track & Field at Doane

“I’m really excited. I enjoy running and participating in track and field is something I wanted to continue in college,” said Nicole Harms as she signed a letter of intent to compete in track and field at Doane University on February 6. The areas Nicole enjoys competing in are the hurdles and sprints.

Nicole has competed in track and field since she was in the seventh grade at Sterling Public Schools. During her high school career, Nicole qualified for the state track meet in several events. In 2018, Harms was a member of the 3200 meter relay team which earned a third place medal. She also competed in the 200 and 400 meter dash. In 2017, Nicole earned a third place medal in the 300 hurdles. She medaled in fifth place in the 100 hurdles. She earned a seventh place medal in the 400 meter dash. In 2016, Nicole placed eighth in the 100 meter hurdles. She medaled in sixth place in the 300 hurdles and seventh in the triple jump.

Johnson-Brock Eagles are Class D-2 State Champions!

Johnson-Brock High School has another addition to its trophy case.

Three wins late last week in Lincoln gave the Eagles the Class D-2 boys’ basketball state crown.

Thursday morning, March 7, the Eagles took care of the Humphrey St. Francis Flyers 67-57.

Friday night, March 8, the Johnson-Brock boys edged the defending D-2 champion Falls City Sacred Heart Irish 57-54. It was the Eagles first win over the Irish in four tries in 2018-2019.

Johnson-Brock grinds out win over Mead in Districts; head to State

PALMYRA - It was good to grind out a win,” said Lucus Dahlinghaus, head boys basketball coach for the Johnson-Brock Eagles who defeated Mead 45-29 in the District finals played at Palmyra on Monday, February 25th.

The Johnson-Brock Eagles will head to the Nebraska State Boys Basketball Tournament with a 21-4 record. The Johnson-Brock boys ranked #5 will open the state tournament against #4 seed Humphrey St. Francis at Lincoln Southwest High School at 9 a.m. on Thursday, March 7th.

“We got off to a great start defensively as we held Mead to 9 points in the first half. Offensively, we struggled to score as Mead tried to slow our scoring momemntum down,” said Coach Dahlinghaus.

Johnson-Brock scored 11 points in the first quarter while holding Mead to four points. Johnson-Brock's Cole Fossenbarger and Wyatt Volker handled the scoring with their three point shots.

LINCOLN - The Sterling Lady Jets were the #5 seed heading into the Class D-2 girls’ State Basketball Tournament last week, but ended up coming home with 4th place overall after the threeday, three-game span of competition.

It's a great opportunity for our girls to get to state; it's been our goal for the last two years,” said Josh Pfeiffer, head coach for the Sterling Lady Jets girls basketball team. “Then finding a way to stay on top in the first game against Chambers Wheeler Central and having the opportunity to play three games was pretty exciting for us,” Pfeiffer said.

Sterling Lady Jets knock off Loomis to advance to State

HAMPTON - The Sterling Lady Jets were the #5 seed at the Class D2-5 District basketball final on Friday, February 22nd which was played at Hampton High School.

The Lady Jets faced the #12 seeded Loomis Lady Wolves and came home with a 64-50 victory to claim the District title and advance to the State Tournament.

“I was really happy with how we started the game. The girls were really focused and locked in. They knew our game plan and executed it to perfection. On top of that, we were shooting the ball really well.

JCC battles Bulldogs in final regular season home game

TECUMSEH - The Johnson County Central Thunderbirds hosted the Auburn Bulldogs in their last regular season game on Friday night, February 15th.

The Thunderbirds trailed the Bulldogs 6-14 after the first period and then got down 12-24 at the half. JCC rallied back in the 3rd period at 18-17, but then were outscored 15-11 in the final period as they lost by a 41-56 count.

Head Coach Kirk Faris commented, “The fans that braved the weather tonight got to watch a good basketball game between two teams that played hard and well. Unfortunately, we didn’t come out on top this time.”

Eli Waring led all scorers with 14 points and had 4 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block and 1 steal. Kole Kleespies followed with 13 points and had three treys, 4 steals, 1 rebound and 1 assist. Trey Holthus also scored 13 points with two treys and he had 3 rebounds and 2 assists.
