Sterling Lady Jets strive for greatness; claim State runner-up

The Sterling Lady Jets didn’t really have a theme going into the 2013-2014 basketball season. However, once Head Coach John Cockerill knew the girls were heading to the Nebraska State Basketball Tournament on a wild card, he kept telling the girls “to strive for greatness” which was an emphasis that he wanted to accomplish personally

Thunderbirds advance to Class C1-1 subdistrict finals

The Johnson County Central Thunderbirds were the #2 seed of the Class C1-1 subdistrict held at Beatrice last week. JCC vs. Syracuse The Thunderbirds opened the subdistrict on Tuesday, February 25th against the #3 seeded Syracuse Rockets. JCC raced out to a 17-12 lead in the 1st period and were ahead 31- 23 heading into the locker rooms at halftime. Both teams scored 26 points in the second half, which allowed JCC to hold on to their
eight point lead and advance to the subdistrict finals with a 57-49 victory.

‘You’ve got spirit JCC Cheerleaders!’

The JCC cheerleaders are State Spirit Award Champions for the 4th year! This year they competed in C1 division. The State Cheer & Dance Championships were held at the Heartland Center in Grand Island on February
21-22nd. They competed in the sideline category, which is a one minute routine using signs, pom-poms, and megaphone. They are scored for team jumps, sharpness in motions, timing, use of the mat, spacing, loudness,
creativeness, spirit, and more. “As a coach I can’t express how proud I am of this squad and would like to thank all of them for their continued dedication to the squad and school,” said Lisa Schuster

“I never expected it,” said Lempka of being among the Nebraska All-Time Chart for points and rebounding. She attributed her 1,120 rebounds to her height of 6’3”. Lempka has also accomplished 337 blocks during her high school girls basketball career. Lempka, a senior on the Sterling Lady Jets girls basketball team, has ranked sixth in the Nebraska All-Time Records Chart with career total of 1,120 rebounds. She’s ranked among the top 100 in points with a 1,321 points.

Freeman turns up pressure on Jets

STERLING - The Sterling Jets hosted the Freeman Falcons in their last regular season home game on Friday, Febraury 21st. Sterling led 17-15 after the first quarter, but were shut out of the 2nd quarter and trailed 17-34 at the half. Freeman outscored Sterling 33-17 in the second half to get the 67-34 win.

Gerdes finishes senior season at 32-10

OMAHA - Johnson County Central senior Thomas Gerdes represented the Thunderbird wrestling team at the 2014 State Wrestling Tournament last week at the Omaha Century Link Center held from Thursday-Saturday, February 20th-22nd. Gerdes entered the Class C State Wrestling Tournament in the 132 lb. division with a 32-8 record.

Lady Jets fall to FCSH; still good shot at State

JOHNSON - The Sterling Lady Jets went into the Class D2-1 subdistricts as the #2 seed and ended up in the second spot after defeating #3 Lewiston and losing to #1 Falls City Sacred Heart.
Sterling vs. Lewiston.
On Tuesday, February 18th Sterling traveled to Johnson for their first round game against Lewiston. Sterling started out in a full court zone press that led to many turnovers in the first quarter. They also had a concerted effort to pound the ball inside to center Jordan Lempka who got seven points in the quarter. She was followed by Erika Goracke and Taylor Cockerill with six and five points respectively and at the end of the first quarter Sterling was up 26-0.

JCC wrestler Gerdes qualifies for State

County Central wrestling team competed at the Class C-1 District Tournament at Malcolm on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14th and 15th. David City won the team District Championship with East Butler  taking the runner up spot.  JCC finished in fifteenth place with 24.5 points. Senior Thomas Gerdes qualified for the state tournament by taking third place in the 132 lb. weight class. Gerdes defeated Michael Otto from HTRS/P.C. with a first period pin and decisioned Jacob Frink (Arlington) 10-4 in the second round.
