Johnson County Central Girls Track

Season Outlook: “The 2014 version of the girls’ track team is entering this season with high expectations. A very strong core group returns from last season and with the addition of a very talented group of newcomers there is a lot to be excited about. The team is led by a group of three seniors that have been on the track team for four years and should not only score points for the team but also will be strong leaders.

Season Outlook: “The boys are looking forward to a great season. We have three players returning who played in every varsity match last year. They are Grant Badertscher, Brent Beethe and Tristan Attebery. The leading contenders for the remaining spots are Mason Waring, Michael Clark, Ethan Clements, Tyson Parrish and Ben Doeden, all of which had excellent seasons on junior varsity last year.

Marjorie Nieveen didn’t tell us last week, but her birthday was one to be noted. She will be celebrating her 90th birthday. Marjorie is known for ‘her enthusiastic outlook on life.’ Cards may be sent to her at P.O. Box 337,  Panama, NE 68419. Services were held for Barbara (Barb) Zugmier Friday morning.  Barb and her family lived in Douglas for a number of years. She was known for attending the school  functions of her children. Barb was retired from Russ’s B &R Grocery. She is survived by her children, Jeff Zugmier, Joe (Rhonda) Zugmier, Jean (John) Harrison, Jason (Cathleen), and her grandchildren

Southeast Community College increases tuition

Board’s action to raise tuition still puts SCC among most affordable in Nebraska  Although Southeast Community College’s Board of Governors approved a $3 per credit hour increase in the tuition rate for 2014-2015,
the new rate likely will remain the lowest, or one of the lowest, among the six community colleges in Nebraska.

Candidates for County Treasurer like working with numbers

Johnson County will have two Republican candidates to vote on in the upcoming primary election on May 13. These two candidates are Nadine Beethe of Elk Creek and Lisa Schmidt of Tecumseh. The winner of the primary race
will run against Democratic candidate Lorie Topp and Libertarian candidate John Sterup in the general election in November

Sterling Lady Jets strive for greatness; claim State runner-up

The Sterling Lady Jets didn’t really have a theme going into the 2013-2014 basketball season. However, once Head Coach John Cockerill knew the girls were heading to the Nebraska State Basketball Tournament on a wild card, he kept telling the girls “to strive for greatness” which was an emphasis that he wanted to accomplish personally

Thunderbirds advance to Class C1-1 subdistrict finals

The Johnson County Central Thunderbirds were the #2 seed of the Class C1-1 subdistrict held at Beatrice last week. JCC vs. Syracuse The Thunderbirds opened the subdistrict on Tuesday, February 25th against the #3 seeded Syracuse Rockets. JCC raced out to a 17-12 lead in the 1st period and were ahead 31- 23 heading into the locker rooms at halftime. Both teams scored 26 points in the second half, which allowed JCC to hold on to their
eight point lead and advance to the subdistrict finals with a 57-49 victory.

‘You’ve got spirit JCC Cheerleaders!’

The JCC cheerleaders are State Spirit Award Champions for the 4th year! This year they competed in C1 division. The State Cheer & Dance Championships were held at the Heartland Center in Grand Island on February
21-22nd. They competed in the sideline category, which is a one minute routine using signs, pom-poms, and megaphone. They are scored for team jumps, sharpness in motions, timing, use of the mat, spacing, loudness,
creativeness, spirit, and more. “As a coach I can’t express how proud I am of this squad and would like to thank all of them for their continued dedication to the squad and school,” said Lisa Schuster
