Sterling Jets Battle Sioux Co. Warriors

Head Coach for the Sterling Jets Football Squad

The Sterling Jets traveled 503 miles to Harrison, NE to take on the Sioux County Warriors in first round playoff action. Tommy Watson turned out to be the story of the contest by scoring five touchdowns on the ground and throwing for three more in leading the Warriors to the first round victory.

Watson got the scoring started on a five yard run. The PAT kick was blocked. He then found Tristan Hunter from 34 yards out for the next Warrior score. He also added the PAT kick. The score stood at 14-0 entering the second quarter.

Lady Jets Defeat Lewiston, Fall to Sacred Heart in Class D-2 Subdistricts

The Sterling Lady Jets defeated the Lewiston Lady Tigers 3-0 in the opening round of the Class D2 subdistrict played at Pawnee City on Tuesday night, October 29. Sterling’s scoring was as follows: 25-12, 25-21, 25-22.

The Sterling Lady Jets faced the Lady Irish of Falls City Sacred Heart in the subdistrict finals later Tuesday night. The Lady Irish beat the Sterling girls 3-0 with scores of 25-5, 25-15 and 25-12.

Lady Thunderbirds are Class C2 District Runner-up

The Johnson County Central Lady Thunderbirds’ volleyball team advanced to the Class C2 District finals which were played in Fairbury on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Thunderbirds faced theSuperior Wildcats which came into the game as the 2018 defending state volleyball champions. The Superior girls handed the Lady Thunderbirds a 3-0 loss with scores of 25-10, 25-18 and 25-11. During the second set, the Lady Thunderbirds proved they were not about to give up easily as they rallied back several times before Superior went on to win the game 25-18.

JCC’s Senior Carrie Beethe topped the girls in kills with eight. Zadie Plager and Ava Berkebile contributed four kills each.

Ava Berkebile totaled 14 digs in this game. Morgan Moran helped out with eight digs.

Overall, Hayley Neemann totaled 15 set assists against the Superior girls.

It’s time for Howling Homestead at Homestead National Monument of America! This exciting, fun, and family-friendly event will be held at the Heritage Center on Saturday, October 26, 2019, 6:00. We will provide a variety of stations to entertain and delight. The Thunderbirds beat two conference opponents to finish fifth in the ECNC Tournament. First, they beat Palmyra 25-23, 25-15. Down 23-20 in the first set, Zadie Plager helped serve the team to victory. “It was a scrappy comeback that helped carry the momentum into the second set,” said JCC’s Head Volleyball Coach Tim Hedger

Zadie Plager led the team with three aces and nine digs. Morgan Moran also added three aces. As a team, they compiled nine aces. The service pressure and consistency helped them take down the Panthers.

Offensively, the Thunderbirds were led by Carrie Beethe with nine kills. Saylor Rother and Moran both contributed four kills in the victory. Beethe added two solo blocks, including a monster block to close out the first set.

The second match-up was against Yutan, who beat Elmwood-Murdock earlier in the night. They won 25-17, 19-25, 25-15 to secure the fifth place finish.

The Lady Thunderbirds of Johnson County Central Schools hosted Malcolm in volleyball action on Monday, October 7. The JCC girls were disappointed with a loss in three sets, 21-25, 19-25, 19-25

Ava Berkebile led the Lady T-Birds with nine kills and two aces. Carrie Beethe added seven kills and paced the team with 15 digs. Zadie Plager added nine digs and five kills, while Saylor Rother added nine digs. Morgan Moran led the team in blocks with two and Hayley Neemann paced the offense with 20 assists. “Malcolm was full of athleticism and talent, but the Thunderbirds fought hard on defense to stay on pace with the Clippers until the end of each set,” Tim Hedger, JCC head volleyball coach said.

JCC Football TeamTriumphs 47-20 Against the Falcons

The Johnson County Central Schools’ football squad has seen its ups and downs this season, having lost three games to some very powerful Class C2 teams. However, the Thunderbirds experienced another boost on Friday as they hosted a winless Freeman Falcons team on a very bitter cold night. The Thunderbirds attacked Freeman 47-20.

Sterling Jets Bomb Deshler Dragons Jets Head Football Coach Brent Heusman

The Sterling Jets hosted the Deshler Dragons to conclude the home portion of the Jets regular season schedule this past Friday. The Jets rolled up nearly 500 yards in total offense and limited the Dragons to about half that total. The Sterling Jets claimed a sweet 60-20 victory on a cold and blustery Friday evening of football on October 11th.

The Jets scored two times in the first quarter on runs of 10 yards by Joel Rathe and on a 55 yard pass from Garrett Hier to Derek Buss. Carson McAuliffe converted one of the PAT’s. The Dragons also got on the scoreboard during the opening quarter with a 53 yard pass from Gavin Nash to Holden Ruhnke. The PAT kick by Adam Roth was also good. The Jets had a 14-8 advantage going into second quarter action.

Results of JCC Volleyball Invitational Played October 5

Johnson County Central Schools hosted its annual volleyball invitational on October 5. In regular volleyball tournament action played Saturday afternoon, Johnson County Central defeated Falls City 2-0 (27-25, 25-17) to earn fifth place finish in the tournament. They previously lost to Exeter-Milligan 1-2 (19-25, 25-18, 19-25) and Thayer Central 0-2 (24-26, 22-25).

Ava Berkebile led the team against Exeter with nine kills and nine digs. Beethe and Moran added seven kills apiece.

Against state-ranked Thayer Central, Carrie Beethe led with 11 kills while Zadie Plager added eight kills. Hayley Neemann had 26 assists.

JCC Plays Best Volleyball Game Against Pawnee City

According to Coach Tim Hedger, the JCC Lady Thunderbirds played their best varsity volleyball game against Pawnee City on their home court Thursday night, October 3. JCC defeated Pawnee City in three sets, (25-12, 25-11, 25-18). “As a team, we had a season high 14 aces,” said Coach Hedger. This included four aces from Morgan Moran and three from both Zadie Plager and Ava Berkebile. Carrie Beethe led in kills with seven. However, all five JCC hitters had at least four kills. “Hayley Neemann distributed the ball well to all of the hitters, which helped our offense dominate at the net,” Coach Hedger added. Defensively, Beethe led the way with six blocks and 17 digs.
