Staff Member Assaulted at TSCI Mon. Afternoon

April 8, 2019 (Lincoln, Neb) – An inmate at the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution (TSCI) assaulted a staff member on Monday, April 8, 2019.

Around 1:40 p.m. the inmate exited his cell when his door was opened by mistake. The inmate hit the staff member in the head and torso with his fists. That staff member was able to help subdue the inmate, along with several other officers who came to assist. One staff member deployed two short bursts of oleoresin capsicum (pepper spray) to bring the inmate under control. A homemade weapon was recovered at the scene, but was not used in the assault.

As a result of this incident and another that occurred on March 21, the Special Management Unit (SMU) at TSCI, has been placed on modified operations*. The SMU holds individuals who are assigned to restrictive housing. The remainder of the facility is operating normally.

Tecumseh Poultry’s Chicken Growing House Destroyed

Article Image Alt Text

The Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s office is still investigating a fire that occurred late Friday night involving a chicken growing house occupied by an estimated 22,000 chickens. The structure is located on property owned by Tecumseh Poultry, three miles north and two miles east of Tecumseh. Only one of the 30 chicken growing houses was totaled in the fire. Tecumseh Poultry is a subsidiary of Tyson Foods which purchased the Smart Chicken company in June of 2018.

“Thankfully, no one was hurt and we sure appreciated the quick response of the Tecumseh Fire Department in putting the fire out,” said Worth Sparkman, communications spokesman for Tyson’s. There were approximately 40 firefighters on the scene as the Tecumseh Fire District called in the Sterling, Cook, and Elk Creek Fire Districts for mutual aid assistance. A few Burr firefighters responded to the call as well.
