Johnson County Hospital campus becomes a tobacco-free environment

As of January 1, employees, visitors and patients at the Johnson County Hospital will no longer be allowed to smoke or use any tobacco products on the hospital’s campus. This includes the hospital area, Tecumseh Family Health Clinic, the Ambulance bay, the parking lots and the house located on the west edge of the property. Employees and visitors cannot sit in their parked cars and smoke; they must leave the hospital grounds. The Johnson County Medical Center and Adams Primary Care are excluded from this policy because they are not on the hospital campus.

monetary support of various economic development projects. •Irelynn Dawn Foster was the first baby born at the Johnson County Hospital in 2013. She weighed 6 lbs., 5 ozs. And was 21 inches long. Her mother is Tawny

Helping to give a little bit of Christmas to children around the world

Local collections for Operation Christmas Child may be finished, but the shoeboxes’ journey to children around the world has just begun. Seven women from the First Baptist Church in Tecumseh experienced the next step in the journey when they traveled to Dallas, Texas to work in one of the processing warehouses December 5-8. These women included Beth Giesbrecht, Paula Clements, Sabrina Roddy, Carol Ensor, Holly Hasselbalch, Loretta Pope and Laurie Martin

Straube plays volleyball European-style

After graduating from Iowa State University last spring, Tecumseh native Jamie Straube, decided she wasn’t ready to give up playing volleyball and decided to move on to play international volleyball. In August, she began playing for the Laon Volley Club in Laon, France, a small town about an hour northeast of Paris and very close to both the Switzerland and Belgium borders. Straube returned home to Tecumseh during the Christmas break and shared some of her experiences by email with Tecumseh Chieftain News Editor Ann Wickett

Bartels recognized by Tecumseh Chamber for promoting businesses and events for the past 18 years

“I’ve interacted with lots of people through the years,” said Eloise Bartels who has been a dedicated supporter and promoter of businesses and community events as secretary of the Tecumseh Chamber  of Commerce for the past 18 years. She believes she holds the record for serving in this capacity. Bartels started out as secretary for 4 ½ years in the 1980s. Then in 1999 she was asked to return and continued in that capacity for 13 ½ years. Later 
on, she added the duties of treasurer to her role

JCC offers alternative classroom to help struggling students stay in school

Johnson County Central Schools will establish an alternative classroom program for students who are struggling in the classroom effective the second semester of the 2013-2014 school year. Superintendent Jack Moles and Principal Rick Lester received a nod to move ahead with this program during a board meeting on December 11

“It exceeded all my expectations,” said Fr. Thomas Dunavan of the Christmas Tour of Homes event sponsored by St. Andrew’s Catholic Church on December 14. “It was a day of harmony in ideas, creativity,  generosity, and God’s gift in putting it all together,” Fr. Dunavan added.

Shawnee Ridge development — good housing helps stimulate the local economy

Are you considering buying a new home? You can be living in a new home within four months if you purchase one of four models of the Remington Homes, Inc., of Lincoln. Remington Homes, Inc., a subdivision of Aspen Builders, has constructed some of the existing homes in the Shawnee Ridge housing development. The Tecumseh Economic Development Committee has partnered with Bob Benes, owner of Remington Homes, to purchase five lots in the Shawnee Ridge Addition in January of 2014 to invite more people to come and live in Tecumseh.

Sterling Board of Ed. reviews bonding options for air quality control project

A representative from D.A. Davidson visited with the Sterling Board of Education about capital interest funds and bond options for financing air quality control project at Sterling Public Schools. The presentation was given at a  regular board meeting on Monday night. The board didn’t take any action because they haven’t reviewed the plans and specifications for the air quality control project yet
