STERLING - The Sterling Jets hosted the Meridian Mustangs this past Friday, September 22nd to open district play for both teams. The offenses ran the show as both teams put up ample points to win the game. In the end, however, the Mustangs defense did just enough to take home the victory, 54-36.

The Jets opened the scoring by going to the air for the first 2 scores of the ball game. Logan Jasa hooked up with Ben Hier from 52 yards out and Tristan Dirks from 63 yards out. Hier converted the 1st PAT on a pass to Spencer McClellan. The Mustangs closed out the quarter scoring on a 1 yard run by Tybor Smith. Smith also ran in the PAT. The score after one quarter of play was 14-8 with the Jets in the lead.

The Mustang defense got a safety to open the 2nd quarter by forcing a penalty in the end zone by the Jet offense. On the ensuing possession, Smith again plunged into the end zone from a yard out to give the Mustangs the lead. The PAT was stopped short. The Jets took back the lead on a 19 yard pass from Jasa to Hier. The PAT pass fell incomplete. The Jets took a 20-16 lead into the halftime break.
