Why did property taxes increase in Johnson County?

Johnson County farmers, especially those who farm several acres of land, may have seen a significant increase in their property tax statements that they received in the mail about December 1. Some people blamed this significant increase on the land valuations and tax levy at Johnson County Central Schools because its tax rate percentage remained unchanged at $1.05 from 2012-13 to 2013-14. However, the property tax request increased by about 12.8%. Superintendent Jack Moles explained that the main causes for this were (a) lost state aid, (b) increased costs identified below, and (c) decreases in federal funding.
